When you need a paved driveway, you typically have two choices: concrete or asphalt. Both have their advantages, and the right choice depends on your particular needs and situation. To help you decide which is right for you, below are some of the differences between the two.

Concrete

DrivewayOf the two materials, concrete requires more funds from a home renovation budget. However, it’s usually more rugged and durable, and it requires less maintenance than the alternative. Application of sealant is not required, although it is beneficial and it makes cleaning oil spills and stains easier.

The expected lifespan of a concrete driveway is 50 years or more. However, it’s less flexible than asphalt and can absorb moisture, so it tends to crack in cold climates more frequently. Finally, concrete is very versatile and comes in numerous colors and textures. Homeowners can choose stamping options, which allows them to select a pattern that best suits their tastes.

Asphalt

Asphalt requires less of an initial investment, but it requires more regular maintenance. For instance, it needs to be sealed every few years and resurfaced occasionally. However, once it’s sealed, homeowners can expect this material to last for over 30 years.

This material requires relatively little maintenance. Homeowners can powerwash it in the summer to get rid of dirt and grime buildup, and sweep leaves away to prevent trapped moisture from cracking the surface.

Repairs may occur more often, especially in the summer, as high temperatures may soften the material, making it prone to cracks and dents. However, it’s easier to blend out the repairs with the rest of the surface, creating an even finish.
