Naptime is not just a reprieve for parents—it’s also important for early childhood growth and development. Naps help babies develop better emotional abilities, decreases anxiety, and helps with expression. The team at Pumpkin Preschool understands just how important naps are. For more than 25 years, they’ve worked with infants, toddlers, and school-age children—naptime included. As Fairfield, Westport, and Shelton, CT’s best preschool center, they have tons of experience getting their students to sleep during naptime, so here are 4 tips to help you if your child struggles with naptime.

  • Routine, Routine, Routine: Children need routine and structure—naptime is no different. Having a schedule or routine when it comes to naptime can not only help your child fall asleep quicker, but it keeps them grounded and sets their internal alarm clock. This will help them with energy levels and emotional balance during the day (keeping the cranky at bay).
  • Mind The Abrupt Changes Or Outings: If you’re heading out longer than you usually do, or if your toddler’s schedule is interrupted in a way he or she isn’t used to, this can mess with naptime. Try to plan ahead as much as possible to include any interruptions or longer outings.
  • Pay Attention To Daytime Activity Levels: Not every child naps at the same time, or gets tired during the same time of day. Make sure naptime works with your child’s needs, as well as your own schedule. This will ensure they sleep fitfully, instead of waking up irritable and unable to sleep later in the night.
  • Notice The Length Of The Nap: Make sure your child is taking a nap that is long enough to help them rest, but not so long that they stay awake throughout the night. Letting your child sleep too long can cause problems for you later on, and waking them up too early can mean crankiness.

These are just a few tips to help you overcome the struggles of naptime with your child. Of course, if your toddler or school-age child attends Pumpkin Preschool, they’ll get naps at just the right time. Beyond naps, you can feel safe knowing that your child is learning in a loving, nurturing environment that prepares them for school readiness.
