Although there are a few months left in the school year, winter is the best time to start thinking about academic-based summer programs for kids. As spaces fill up quickly, early enrollment will ensure they get spots in programs that allow them to excel. To help with the search, below are a few standout qualities to look for in a summer learning program.

Characteristics of an Effective Summer Learning Program

1. Small Student-to-Teacher Ratio

summer programSummer programs often have fewer students than classes children attend during the school year. When looking for a program, make sure to ask administrators about class sizes. With fewer students in each group, teachers will have time to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each pupil and give them the attention needed to master assignments and boost self-esteem.

2. Engaging Curriculum

When they know other kids are out with friends, it can be difficult for children to stay focused during summer programs. To make the experience more enjoyable, look for a center that offers opportunities for kids to have fun while they learn. This can include using real-world examples to solve math problems, reading interesting books to build language skills, and more activities to help kids flex their mental muscles and remain engaged.

3. Team-Oriented Projects

Building socialization skills in an important part of childhood development. The summer program should provide activities for kids to interact with their classmates. By solving story problems, working on science projects, and engaging in other activities, kids learn how to respect each other and work together to complete tasks.
