Moving can already be stressful, but doing it with a pet bird makes it even trickier. After all, you can’t pause your pet’s needs just because you’re relocating, and birds are especially anxious about change. Use these bird care tips to make the process go smoothly.

4 Tips for Moving With a Pet Bird

1. Get Documents First

At least a week or two before moving, take your bird to a veterinarian to get health certificates and a copy of their medical history. Make sure you have proof of ownership as well. Keep the documents in your car’s glove box or another easily accessible place. You’ll then have the documents available for your bird’s new veterinarian.

2. Practice in Advance

If you plan to transport your bird in a carrier, give them about a month to get used to it. Place them inside it for short periods every day, along with treats and toys. This will help them develop a positive association with the carrier, so they’ll be less stressed when they have to spend several hours inside it for the move.

3. Keep Them Comfortable

movingWhen you buy a carrier, it should include a perch, and neither the top nor bottom should touch your bird’s head or tail. Cover the floor with litter or an absorbent material, like a soft cloth.

Reduce your bird’s stress levels by making sure they’re the last to leave your old home and the first to arrive at your new one.

4. Pack Well

When you pack your car for moving, make enough space in the backseat to buckle your bird’s carrier there. Don’t surround it with lots of other items and boxes to avoid damaging the carrier.

Include food and toys in the carrier to keep your bird fed and entertained. Hydrate them with pieces of fresh fruit rather than water, which may spill during transport. Turn on the air conditioner to keep the environment cool.
