Developing a packing strategy long before you start filling your moving boxes will reduce your stress, the amount of time it will take you to pack, and the energy you and your moving service spend. Below are four tips for easing the packing process and speeding up your moving plans.

How to Develop a Packing Plan

1. Clean Up Before Packing Up

First, go through your belongings to see if there are things you no longer want or need. Packing unneeded items will eliminate essential packing time, space in your moving van or new home, and money spent on movers and boxes.

Remove the clutter around the house by sorting your belongings into piles. Make a trash pile, a donation pile, a storage pile, and a packing pile. Discard the items into appropriate trash and donation facilities and then only give your moving service the boxes you know you are keeping.

2. Organize

Accumulate all of your packing supplies first. Think through how many boxes you will need in order to save you from making extra trips. Label everything. Do not think that you will remember which unmarked brown box is which by the time you move everything into your new home.

Make it foolproof by implementing color-coded stickers, locating extra sharpies, and using lots of tape. This organizational system will help you and your moving service handle each package accordingly.

3. Pack Room-By-Room

Packing your whole house can easily become overwhelming. Break it down into rooms. You can target your focus and streamline your work to make the process easier and quicker. Begin with the rooms that you use the least and start packing them long before moving day.

If you slowly check rooms off the list, you will have far less to do when you are finally ready to pack up the moving van on the day of. You also will have a much easier time unpacking if you keep your boxes from each room sorted into sections.

4. Remove Distractions

Plan for packing days by clearing your schedule. You do not want to start packing, have to get up for appointments and errands, and then come home and settle into packing again. You will take far less time to finish if you schedule your packing times.

Also, if you have young children or pets, try to find a babysitter for them who is outside of the house so that you can focus. If you have older children, give them specific instructions on what and how to pack.
