It can be alarming to discover that someone broke into your home or workplace. What’s worse, though, is when you suspect that someone is inside but can’t see any clear evidence, like ransacked rooms or damaged windows. However, your doors can provide a lot more information than you realize, even if the signs of entry aren’t obvious. Here are three signs of tampering that require the help of a locksmith.

How Can You Tell if Your Locks Were Tampered With?

1. Obvious Damage

The clearest sign of a break-in is visible damage to the door. The use of brute force is not uncommon, although many “experienced” intruders will use more sophisticated methods that are much less detectable. The person may damage the lock entirely in their attempt to get inside, or break down the door entirely. In some cases, they may try to take a subtle approach, leaving behind bent latches or warped frames.

2. Hardware Changes

Thomasville, NC locksmithUnder normal circumstances, you can simply slide your key inside the lock, turn it, and open the door. But if the locks were tampered with, you may notice that it doesn’t turn the same way that it once did. It might seem loose and lax to the touch when you turn the key, for example, or be extremely difficult to twist.

Sometimes intruders use a method called bumping, which involves filing a key, inserting it into the keyhole, and pulling back before reinserting it with the thump of a hard object. They repeat this process until the bump key catches all of the lock’s tumblers, which allows them to open the door. A locksmith will generally need to replace the system for best results.

3. Scratched Metal

You may not notice it right away, but small scratches on the metal portion surrounding the keyhole may indicate a break-in. This is typically caused by a technique called picking, during which the intruder uses some type of flat device, like a screwdriver, to pick the lock. Because it’s a less aggressive method than bumping, it’s less likely to cause visible damage. Subtle nicks are more common, so have a locksmith investigate if you see any.
