With warm days ahead of you, you might be looking forward to a scenic road trip or even daily drives to see the scenery. However, if your air conditioner malfunctions, your adventures may start to feel uncomfortable. Look out for the following signs your system needs a mechanic.

What Are Signs Your Car AC May Need Repair?

1. Strange Sounds

If you hear a squealing or grinding sound from your AC, the source is likely the compressor. This component is responsible for the flow of refrigerant through the condenser, starting the whole process that keeps you cool. When the pulley bearing in your condenser becomes worn out, it causes unpleasant noises. Your mechanic will likely replace the bearing.

Another part your compressor relies on is a clutch, which tends to wear over time. When it does, you’ll hear a rattling sound. If you catch it soon enough, you’ll only need a new clutch. Wait too long and you might need the whole compressor replaced.

2. Less Airflow

mechanicAre you turning up the AC to its maximum only to be left dissatisfied? The moisture inside your AC makes it an ideal home for mold and mildew; once they’re thriving, they might block your heat exchanger’s fins, which can stop airflow. To prevent the proliferation of mold and mildew, clean your evaporator regularly and run ‘defrost’ to dry out the system.

Weakened airflow might also be caused by a loose blower hose; thus, air won’t pass through the evaporator and into the cabin. Your mechanic might repair or replace the hose.

3. Water Pooling

Typically, excess water from your car’s AC leaves your car through the evaporator drain.  When the drain is blocked by debris, the condensation will back up, leading your evaporator core to overflow. This results in moisture leaking from your AC vents and creating puddles in the cabin. If water remains in the system for too long, it will damage your AC’s electronics.
