As winter winds down and warmer, milder weather approaches, it’s essential to inspect your sprinkler system for the seasons ahead. Taking extra time to prepare your irrigation provides you with the opportunity to fix any issues before they become worse. Here are some simple steps for readying your sprinklers for the warmer months.

How to Get Your Sprinkler System Ready for Spring

1. Do a Soil Check

Fairweather days may have arrived, but it could still take the ground some time to thaw. Starting your sprinklers when the dirt’s frozen is a bad idea, as water could freeze, expand, and break the water lines. Ensure the soil’s completely thawed by digging at least a foot down with a shovel in a hidden area on your lawn. If it’s still frozen, give the ground a few extra days to thaw.

2. Inspect Sprayer Heads

Next, check each sprinkler head for debris or damage. Debris can get stuck in the sprinkler head and impede water flow, so gently dislodge the objects if there are any. If you see any damaged nozzles, replace them with new parts from your local lawn and garden center.

A damaged head assembly, on the other hand, warrants professional help. Schedule a visit from an expert before turning your system on.

3. Check Valves & Pumps

Repeat with the pumps by performing a visual inspection to ensure there are no signs of visible damage. When properly working, the valves and pumps are responsible for transporting water to the sprinkler heads.

4. Turn the Water Valve On

Afterward, slowly turn on the water valve. Allowing water to enter the lines gradually minimizes the risk of excess water pressure, which can burst your system’s pipes. If you have a ball valve, turn it until the handle is parallel to the pipe (one-quarter turn). In-ground shutoff valves, on the other hand, require a sprinkler valve key, which must be turned counterclockwise completely.

5. Go Station by Station

Finally, turn on a single station at a time using the control panel. This allows you to check for leaks, geysers, or low pressure in each irrigation zone. If you spot any issues, adjust your sprinkler nozzles as needed.
