Karate is an excellent way to help your kids to get moving while learning an important life skill—self-defense. However, those initial classes can be a little intimidating for kids, which is why taking the right steps beforehand are so important. Here are a few important tips for preparing your child for their first martial arts class.

3 Tips to Prepare Kids for Karate Lessons

1. Choose the Right Starting Class

It will be easier for your child to adjust to a new setting if other kids are also new to the experience, so make sure to select the right starting course. Talk with instructors about which classes people typically attend when they have little or no experience, and sign them up for the appropriate class. If your child has taken karate classes before, contact their previous teacher to determine which level they would be comfortable starting at.

2. Have Everything They Need

karateBefore beginning the course, check with the instructors to see what your child needs. Make sure they have the right clothing, including a full karate uniform. Pack water bottles and snacks for before and after practice, so your little one can stay comfortable. Fill out all necessary paperwork prior to the first day, and chat with the instructors to make sure your child is on their roles and ready to start class.

3. Take Them on a Tour of the Studio

Before their first karate class, do what you can to introduce your child to the experience. Show them their karate studio, introduce them to their instructors, and, if possible, have them talk with other kids who will be entering the program. The more familiarity a child has with the program, the easier attending those first few classes will be.
