Once spring temperatures have stayed consistently moderate, and the threat of any snow is behind you, it's time to put your snowplow into storage for the warmer seasons. Whether you have a top-quality Meyer® snowplow or an older model that you're trying to preserve for a bit longer, proper off-season prep will help you maximize the lifespan of your machine. Consider the following guide to discover some simple tips for getting your snowplow ready for storage.

How to Store Snowplows During the Off-Season

1. Clean It Thoroughly

Start by removing any dirt or debris from your plow. Scrub away salt, asphalt, and other grime, which could corrode the components if left unaddressed. If your plow is painted, consider touching up any areas as needed.

2. Grease All Moving Components

Any component on the plow that moves should be greased to keep corrosion at bay. If there are already signs of corrosion, remove it with a fine-grit sandpaper. Grease the lift cylinder, angle cylinders, the A-frame, and any other pivot points on the system. Finish up by applying a coat of dielectric grease to the electrical components.

3. Replace the Hydraulic Fluid

Meyer snow plow Kalispell, MTIf the hydraulic fluid is too low when you put the plow into storage, it can allow moisture to develop on the components during the warm weather, which may cause rust. Old fluid may also contain particles that can deteriorate the plow's interior, so replace it with a fresh supply. Check the pump assembly filter for buildup too, and if it looks dirty, replace it before putting the plow into storage.

4. Reduce the Spring Tension

When you're using your plow, you'll want to keep the tension on the trip return springs tight. To extend their lifespan, loosen them before you put them into storage. This step is relatively simple, and most Meyer snow plows have two nuts per spring bolt that can be adjusted as needed.

5. Store Indoors

Finally, keep your plow stowed safely indoors, as storing it outside will accelerate rust buildup. If you do need to store it outdoors, consider keeping it on a raised platform to prevent the plow from resting on the ground for months at a time. Also, invest in a cover that will protect it from rain, wind, and other adverse weather conditions.
