Once summer arrives, you might spend more time outside in the warm weather. As the sun’s UV rays can cause painful burns, take steps to protect your skin. To avoid a trip to the hospital to treat blisters, fevers, and other sunburn symptoms, follow these tips when enjoying the warmth this summer.

How to Avoid Sunburns & Prevent Skin Cancer

1. Wear Sunscreen

Whether it’s cloudy or the skies are clear, remember to apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 15. Higher-SPF solutions contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, minerals that block harmful UV rays before your skin can absorb them.

If you have any allergies, check the ingredients before applying it. Also, choose a waterproof sunblock if you plan to swim and rub it in 30 minutes before you jump into the water.

2. Stay in the Shade

hospitalWhenever possible, look for areas with shade while outdoors. Avoiding direct sunlight will protect your skin from harsh exposure and keep you cool. Don’t go to the beach without an umbrella or canopy to shelter you from the sun.

You can also carry a parasol umbrella to ensure you remain in the shade at all times. Wearing pants and long sleeves in linen, cotton, and other breathable fabrics will provide an extra layer of protection while ensuring you remain comfortable and don’t overheat.

3. Don’t Forget a Hat

Keep a wide-brimmed hat near your front door so you won’t forget to wear it. Covering your head will prevent a trip to the hospital for ointments and cold compresses to relieve painful sunburns on the scalp.

A visor or sun hat will also keep the UV rays off your nose, cheeks, and ears. This will keep your face protected until you can reapply sunblock.
