When you visit Maui, taking a road trip along the stunning Hana Highway is an essential adventure. The landscape on the road to Hana features cascading waterfalls, hikes through bamboo forests, lava caves, and beaches with red and black sand. This narrow, winding highway gets a lot of traffic, so be considerate of others by following a few etiquette tips during your drive.

An Etiquette Guide for Visitors on the Road to Hana

1. Let Locals Pass

Residents know the highway well, so they’ll want to drive a bit faster than you. They’re comfortable taking the winding turns quickly and don’t want to stop and sightsee as you do. If you spot a local coming up behind you, pull as far to the right as possible, slow down, and wave them past.

2. Don’t Stop in the Road

However, you should never park on the road or bridges, as it may be hazardous to traffic. There are designated pull-outs along the highway, so wait until you get to the next one to get out of the vehicle.

3. Watch for Single Lanes

There are many single-lane sections and bridges on the road to Hana. When you approach one, slow down and look for oncoming traffic. Treat it like a four-way stop, and wait your turn. The first driver to arrive at the lane goes first, while the other waits in the wider area.

4. Don’t Trespass

There’s a lot of private land along the highway. Although some of these areas have visible trails going onto them, you aren’t allowed there. Don’t trespass, and respect the signs that indicate an area is private property.

5. Leave Natural Souvenirs Behind

You’re welcome to enjoy the island’s beauty, but don’t take anything home with you. Leave sand, coral, shells, stones, and other natural items where they belong. This protects the native ecosystem and allows others to enjoy the beauty as well. Buy your souvenirs at one of the many shops along the highway instead.
