When planning a trip to the beach, it pays to be prepared. In addition to your swim trunks, there are a number of essential items you don’t want to be without. Before you zip up your beach bag and hop in the car, pack the following gear.

4 Must-Have Items for a Beach Outing

1. Swim Trunks & a Towel

Even if you don’t plan on going in the water, it’s a good idea to bring along a bathing suit or a pair of swim trunks. You might change your mind and decide you want to take a dip, especially if it ends up being a hot day. A towel is also necessary to dry yourself off.

2. Sunblock & a Hat

It’s dangerous to go to the beach without proper protection from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. Pack a bottle of waterproof sunscreen—the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using one with an SPF of at least 30—as well as a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face. In addition to minimizing your risk of skin cancer, you’ll ward off wrinkles and other premature signs of aging.

3. Beverages

Florida swim trunksStaying hydrated is important when you spend many hours under the sun. In addition to filling a cooler with beverages such as soda and juice, bring at least two bottles of water per person.

Take sips throughout the day to avoid dehydration, which can occur quickly when you’re lying out in the hot sun. Also, bring can coolers or koozies to keep your drinks from becoming warm and going flat.

4. Portable Water Bowl

Don’t forget about water for your pup! If you’re bringing your dog to the beach, they’ll need a portable water bowl to stay hydrated. Make sure your dog drinks from it frequently, and refill it whenever it gets low.
