Today, many people spend a significant part of their workday in front of a computer. As a result of so much screen time, it’s common to develop neck pain, even if you’ve never had this issue before. For tech workers and others who spend lots of time at the computer, following a few simple guidelines can help mitigate this problem.

Do:

Raise your screen higher.

neck painA computer screen that is too low can cause you to crane your neck at an unnatural angle, resulting in increased strain and pain. Often, adjusting your screen by even a few inches can be enough to make your pain go away.

Set time limits.

Consider setting a time limit for your computer use each day. Generally speaking, the less time you spend in front of a screen, the less likely you are to develop neck pain. This is especially true if work stresses you out. Stress can cause your body to reduce blood flow to the muscles, increasing tension. Regular breaks will offer both mental and physical relief.

Don’t:

Stay in the same position.

Even if work requires you to be in front of a computer, you shouldn’t sit in the same position for hours on end. Stretch once an hour to keep your muscles from getting stiff. Consider using a standing desk so you can alternate between standing and sitting throughout the day.

Ignore your hydration needs.

Proper hydration keeps your muscles loose and helps prevent cramping — even for sedentary work at the computer. Drinking plenty of water can also offer headache relief, which often stems from stress and muscular tension.
