When Spring’s sunny, warm days arrive, you can’t help but want to be outside. However, the pollen from all those beautiful trees and flowers can warrant harsh allergic reactions. Springtime allergies are a hassle to deal with, but they’re manageable with a few precautions and a trip to the pharmacy.

How to Manage Your Allergies This Spring

1. Talk With Your Doctor

Although allergy symptoms are consistent– runny nose, sneezing, coughing, watery or itchy eyes, and dark circles under the eyes – not everyone responds well to the same treatments. Before taking any medications, talk with your doctor about different treatment options. For example, an over-the-counter medicine from the pharmacy may keep your symptoms in check; however, you may need a prescription for severe allergies.

2. Keep Your Home Allergen Free

pharmacyKeeping your windows closed when pollen is prevalent will help prevent spores from getting into your home. Also, invest in an air purifier to remove airborne allergens, and remember to change your HVAC system’s air filters. Vacuum and dust regularly (at least twice a week) to remove pollen and other allergens from your home. Wearing a pharmaceutical mask from while you sweep will keep you from inhaling an abundance of allergens, such as spores.

3. Stay Indoors

Going outside when pollen counts are high exacerbates your symptoms, so stay indoors when the air is full of allergens. Check a mobile weather app for the daily pollen count. Keep in mind; pollen levels tend to be highest in the morning, so plan outdoor activities closer to the afternoon. Pollen is usually at its lowest after a rainstorm, so avoid venturing outside during dry heat days.

4. Time Medication Correctly

Some allergy medications, such as nasal sprays, work best when taking them before symptoms occur. Although, you must read medication packages carefully for their designed use. Antihistamine medications block the histamines in pollen, while decongestants relieve stuffy noses. However, avoid some decongestants if you aren’t already stuffy.
