Creating a coin collection can require significant time and effort. Owners should make sure their assortment is securely stored, so it lasts for many years and maintains value. Here is some advice to keep your prized collection in top shape.

3 Tips for Safely Storing Coin Collections

1. Use Climate Control

When copper and silver coins are exposed to moisture, they can change colors and lose integrity. Only store coin collections in climate-controlled areas, from your home to storage rentals that offer humidity and temperature control. When keeping collections at home, place them in the closet or other places where they won’t be exposed to sunlight.

2. Container

coin collection Triad Area NCNever stash coins between cardboard or paper layers, as these materials may contain acid. Acids can tarnish silver or copper coins through oxidation, causing discoloring and toning that can lower coin value.

To avoid this issue, store your collection in hard plastic sleeves. Softer varieties work for short-term storage, but often contain PVC which can leak due to time, heat, and humidity, and damage the coin surface. Hard sleeves will limit dust buildup while allowing for airflow to prevent mold and moisture.

3. Perform Periodic Inspections

Some people stash their coin collection and don’t look at it for a few years, during which the coins may incur damage. Take a look at your assortment once a season or every other month to inspect for moisture buildup, rust, or pest issues that could lower the value of the currency.
