Summer is just around the corner, and there’s no better way to beat the heat than taking a dip in the pool. Unfortunately, while most families can enjoy the water carefree, about 10 people die of unintentional drowning every day. Here are four ways to keep little ones of all ages — from newborn infants to teens — safe at the pool.

How to Avoid Accidents at the Pool

1. Give Them Swimming Lessons

Swimming lessons and water safety classes are essential. Children not only learn skills such as floating, basic strokes, and treading, but they’ll also learn not to be panicked in the water.  Inflatable swimming aids  such as “floaties” do not prevent drowning and are not a substitute for approved life jackets or formal swimming lessons.

2. Never Allow Horseplay or Running Near the Pool

Kids love to run and play, but slippery surfaces and the risk of falling in the water make the poolside an unsafe place to do so. Make and enforce a strict rule of no horseplay in the pool area. Also, explain to them that bicycles and other mobilized toys should be kept away from the water so no one slips into the water.

3. Supervise at All Times

Make sure the person on pool duty is attentive and a good swimmer so they will be able to intervene in case of an emergency. It is also a good idea to take CPR classes so you can help your child or others if an accident happens.

4. Install Barriers

Install a pool cover on your home pool so kids will not fall into it when there is no one supervising. It is also a good idea to install a fence around the pool area for the same purpose. Make sure the barrier is an adequate height to discourage climbing and has childproof locks or latches.
