Modern cars are equipped with a sophisticated network of sensors that each connect to a different system of the vehicle. When a sensor detects something wrong in its associated system, it sends a warning in the form of a dashboard indicator light. In certain situations, these lights are signs of a serious operational issue—a red flag that you need to stop the car immediately and contact roadside assistance.

What Do Dashboard Warning Lights Mean?

1. Check Engine Light

The check engine light looks like a simple outline of an engine. If it illuminates and stays solid, it signals a nonemergency problem that isn't the highest priority but should still be checked out as soon as possible. If the check engine light is blinking, there is some type of engine crisis.

In this case, pull the car over and call for roadside assistance. In most situations, a blinking light means an engine misfire is causing unburned fuel to enter the exhaust system, raising the temperature of the internal components to dangerous and damaging levels.

2. Brake Light

roadside assistanceDepending on the make/model of your vehicle, the brake light can look like an exclamation point, the letter P, the word BRAKE, or the letters ABS (antilock brake system). This light suggests a potentially serious concern with the brakes.

It may simply be a bad sensor, or it may mean the brakes are failing; there's no way to know until you take the car in for a diagnostics test. Always err on the side of caution and have this light checked out by a professional right away.

3. Temperature Light

The temperature light resembles a thermometer. It indicates that the engine is running too hot and that overheating is a real possibility. This can happen for any number of reasons, including low coolant, hose leaks, and a broken thermostat.

Whatever the cause, overheating can do major engine damage. Again, to be on the safe side, pull over and contact roadside assistance if your temperature light illuminates.
