The newly-formed Piedmont Triad Women in Pensions Group held their February meeting at SMOHK’D Restaurant in downtown Greensboro, attended by employee benefit plan sponsors, advisors, auditors, attorneys, and consultants, who addressed timely issues impacting their industry. Topics included the “Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement” (SECURE) Act and the credits now available to small businesses implementing a retirement plan or adding an automatic enrollment feature to an existing plan. The group also discussed a recent article published by the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA) stating that the IRS is planning a change in procedure that may end the Voluntary Corrections Program (VCP) and "subject a massive number of plans to audit.” This shift was relayed to the American Retirement Association (ARA) by an anonymous IRS whistleblower and has broad implications for the industry, which the ASPPA does not consider to be positive, with the potential for a significant increase in costs to plans and the participants they cover. If you are interested in learning more about the SECURE Act, changes to the VCP, or the Piedmont Triad Women in Pensions Group, please email Starla Hughes at shughes@smccpa.com or Veronica Bray at veronica@retirementplanadvisorsearch.
