Every season has its challenges for roofing materials, even the summertime. Moisture and degradation can damage your client’s roofs, so use the following guide to help your clients prepare their homes or buildings for the warmer months.

How Roofing Materials Are Damaged in Summer

1. Weather

While they aren't a constant problem, one or two powerful summer storms can tear up your roof. Powerful wind rips up shingles, while heavier rains than normal can cause leaks.

The best way to deal with storm weather is to inspect the roofs before the season starts whenever possible and perform maintenance. Follow up after a storm to repair any damage as well.

2. Humidity

Roofing MaterialsWhen the weather is hot, humid air can rise and get trapped under the roof. This can cause mold, wood rot, and warping to both the rafters and exterior roofing materials. Asphalt shingles that have been warped will need to be replaced. You can prevent this problem from repeating by improving the roof's ventilation.

3. Sun Damage

Most materials, particularly organic materials, break down in sunlight. The UV radiation enters the material and breaks down bonds, causing materials to bleach, warp, shrink, weaken, and crack.

Metal roof shingles are immune to sun damage, so you can recommend metal roofs to your clients to avoid this issue. There are also sun-resistant coatings to apply to less durable roofs to slow the process.
