Back pain is common among pregnant women, especially as their belly grows. Since they're generally advised against taking various pain relievers, though—including over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen and naproxen—they must find other ways to cope with the discomfort. As such, many women try prenatal chiropractic care, which can provide much-needed relief.

What Does a Prenatal Chiropractor Do?

Prenatal chiropractors specialize in treating pregnant women. While they use many of the same techniques as general practitioners, they modify them first to meet their patients’ unique needs and avoid putting any pressure on the abdomen. They also use special tables that can adjust to the curves of a pregnant woman’s body.

A prenatal chiropractor’s primary goal is to clear subluxations that are inhibiting mobility, restricting posture, or preventing some portion of the central nervous system from communicating with the rest of the body. These subluxations can develop for a number of reasons, including poor posture, severe stress, and improper lifting.

What are the Benefits of Prenatal Chiropractic Care?

prenatal chiropracticResearch indicates that pregnant women can benefit from chiropractic care in a variety of ways. Simple adjustments may relieve pain, control nausea, and reduce the duration of labor and delivery. Certain techniques can also relieve stress on the uterus, strengthen the supporting ligaments, and balance the pelvis, thereby allowing for optimal fetal positioning.

While there don't appear to be any risks of prenatal chiropractic care, it’s important to talk to your doctor before undergoing spinal adjustments. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, your doctor may advise you to hold off on various therapies, including spinal adjustments.
