The 40 weeks of pregnancy can transform the body, from weight gain to hormonal changes. You will experience different symptoms as you move through the stages of your pregnancy. While each woman’s experience is unique, there are some common symptoms to expect during each trimester. Know what to prepare yourself for in the coming months, and you can work with your hospital doctor to manage those symptoms.

Common Symptoms to Expect During Pregnancy

1. First Trimester

Noticeable symptoms typically first begin at around six to eight weeks. Nausea and vomiting are common at this stage and is also known as morning sickness. Women might experience the feeling at all hours of the day. They may start to feel food cravings or even feel sick smelling a specific food. They may also experience tiredness, constipation, heartburn, and swelling of their breasts.

2. Second Trimester

Body aches are common in the back, abdomen, and groin. Stretch marks appear on the thighs, butt, breasts, and belly. They may begin to feel the baby moving, which may seem similar to gas moving around in the intestine. The morning sickness often goes away, while food cravings remain.

3. Third Trimester

The third trimester begins at the 28th week, and the growing baby is putting more pressure on the internal organs, which may lead to needing to use the bathroom more often and more difficulty breathing. The ankles, face, and fingers may swell. Heartburn, insomnia, mood swings, and breast changes are common. Braxton-Hicks contractions, or false contractions, may occur. Toward the end of this trimester, real contractions of labor mean it’s time to go to the hospital.
