A self-storage unit is a perfect place to pack away your winter clothes or hand-me-downs your children don't quite fit yet. To maximize space, use some proven packing tips. The following techniques will keep your clothes looking great without sacrificing valuable storage space.

How to Properly Pack Clothes for Self-Storage

1. Roll Your Pants

You can save significant space by rolling your pants instead of folding them. Fold the legs over one another, and then fold the seat on top. Next, halve them vertically and roll the remaining fabric into a tight cylinder. You can easily fit a large number of pants together and tuck them into crevices where needed.

2. Square Your T-Shirts

self-storageWhen folding a shirt, first lay it flat on the table. Fold the left sleeve onto the front of the shirt, and then fold the remaining fabric again to cover almost half of the head hole. Do the same on the right side, so the shirt is in a long, thin rectangular shape. When you bend the shirt in half, it should be nearly square. This system prevents wrinkles and allows you to stack a large number of t-shirts into a small space.

3. Create Sock Buns

Socks are a notorious space stealer because they're difficult to fold. To save room, position one sock horizontally and lay the end of the other vertically to form a T shape with the elastic loop at the bottom. Next, roll the horizontal sock tightly over the other until you make an I shape. Fold them in half, and tuck the bundle through the vertical sock's elastic band to form a tight, easy-to-store bun.

4. Vacuum Seal

Once you've folded everything optimally, place the clothing in vacuum seal bags. These draw all remaining air to compress the clothing further, while also keeping everything clean and dry. This technique is ideal for large jackets and awkward pieces that aren't easy to fold.
