Heat pumps are convenient, all-in-one heating and cooling systems. In cool weather, they use refrigerant and heat exchanger coils to warm air and transfer it into the home. During the warm seasons, the same coils act as evaporators, cooling the air and removing humidity. Like any HVAC component, these systems may experience problems over time. Below are some common reasons you could find yourself needing heat pump repair or maintenance.

5 Heat Pump Issues & Their Potential Causes

1. Constant Running

Unless it’s an especially chilly day that’s abnormal for the South, your heat pump shouldn’t be running constantly. In some cases, this could indicate a problem with the compressor contractor, which determines the level of power being delivered to the heat pump. Fortunately, heat pump repair professionals can replace the component.

2. Insufficient Heat

When you don’t feel warm air coming from the pump, there could be several reasons. You may simply need to swap out the system’s air filter or clear away any exterior debris blocking its airflow, so check these issues first. If the issue persists, the system may need to have its refrigerant levels replenished.

3. Insufficient Cooling

If the air is actually hot when it’s supposed to be cool, however, the reversing valve may need to be replaced. This key component allows the refrigerant to be reversed so it can be used for both heating and cooling.

4. Strange Noises

Rattling noises can indicate a loose component or even a cover panel that’s shifted out of place. Screeching noises, on the other hand, may indicate worn motor bearings or another serious issue that needs professional attention.

5. Failure to Turn On

If your heat pump won’t kick on, first check your thermostat settings to make sure they haven’t been changed and that the batteries aren’t dead. A tripped breaker could also prevent the system from starting, so take a look at your circuit panel. If these issues have been ruled out, there may be a problem with the thermostat or starter capacitor.
