Gutter guards are designed to keep leaves and organic material out of your gutters. However, some guards have gaps that allow debris to still accumulate in your covered gutters, making it difficult to clean them out. Below is more information about how to efficiently clean gutters that have guards.

3 Tips for Cleaning Gutters With Guards

1. Prepare the Area

Before you start cleaning your gutters, protect the landscaping under them with waterproof tarps. They’ll make it easier to haul away debris while protecting sensitive vegetation.

Securely place your ladder at the starting point, and ensure there are three sturdy points of contact.  Ask someone to hold the ladder to improve stability if you don’t feel secure.

2. Remove Gutter Guards

guttersGutter guards are either clipped onto gutters or snuggly sit in the ducts. Before beginning, remove them, so it’s easier to clean out debris. If you have a partner available, ask them to help by placing the guards on the ground around your home. When you’re finished cleaning, the pieces can be passed back up and reinserted with no issues.

If you’re alone, place the guards on a safe, within easy-reach spot next to their initial sections. Once the project’s done, carefully slide them back into place.

3. Remove and Rinse Out Debris

After putting on a pair of gloves, remove the solid debris from the gutters. When you’re finished, use a garden hose or pressure washer to rinse the ducts out, and check for proper drainage. If the water is pooling near downspouts, check them for clogs.
