How to Get a Job After Cosmetology School, Boston, Massachusetts

Earning a degree from cosmetology school is an impressive first step, but you might wonder what you need to do to get a job in the industry. Whether you want to be a makeup artist, hairdresser, or nail technician, there are a handful of steps you need to take before you start practicing. Use this helpful guide to organize your post-graduation plan.

4 Ways to Be Proactive After Graduating From Cosmetology School

1. Talk to Your Instructors

Even after you get your degree, your cosmetology school instructors can be valuable contacts and resources. Ask them what you need to do to get your license. They can answer simple questions like how much the exams cost and what supplies you’ll need in your kit, as well as give you personalized feedback about how you should be preparing for the test.

2. Take Your State Board Exams

Taking the exam while the information you learned in beauty school is still fresh in your mind can give you a better chance of passing on your first attempt. The sooner you pass, the sooner you’ll be able to start your career.

3. Get an Apprenticeship

When you pass your board exams and get your cosmetology license, apply for paid apprenticeships at nearby salons. An apprenticeship as a stylist or nail technician will provide you with hands-on experience and help you keep honing your skills.

4. Apply

Once your apprenticeship ends, apply for commission-based jobs at hair or nail salons. You’ll make more money and continue perfecting your hair, skin, makeup, or nail technique, putting you in a better position to become more independent and eventually start your own business.
