Many people leave their cars in vehicle storage to keep them secure without taking up space in their garages. When a car sits unused over the winter, it might require maintenance when you come back for it in the spring. Here are a few tips to ensure your vehicle is safe before you drive it.

How to Take a Vehicle Out of Outdoor Winter Storage

1. Check the Tires

The cold weather often decreases the pressure in car tires. Use a pressure gauge to assess whether you need to fill them up. Find the recommended pounds per square inch (PSI) for your units on the sidewall of a tire or on the car door.

Most manufacturers recommend between 30 and 35 PSI. Check for any cracks or wear that may cause air leaks before using a portable air compressor to fill them up to that level.

2. Power the Battery

First, visually inspect it to check that the terminals are not corroded. If you notice rust, clean it off with water, baking soda, and a toothbrush. Ensure the cables are all connected before using a multimeter to assess the battery charge. It’s ready to drive when the charge is between 13.7 and 14.7 volts. If the measurement is below that level, use a charger to power it up.

3. Top Up Any Fluids

Open the car hood and assess the oil level by removing the dipstick and seeing if the substance meets its line. Then, check the coolant to ensure the engine won’t overheat. Make sure the fluid falls between the lines that indicate acceptable levels. Next, assess the power steering and brake fluid dipsticks to ensure you can easily control the car. If these levels are all acceptable, the car is ready to drive.
