A furnace is generally a low maintenance appliance, but it still requires some upkeep to work efficiently. Skipping regular maintenance can end up causing the HVAC parts to overheat and fail prematurely. The following guide offers a few ways to avoid unexpected breakdowns or costly repairs.

How to Maintain Your Furnace

1. Inspect the Pilot Light

Usually, you can tell if your furnace is working properly by taking a look at the burner flames. In normal operating conditions, the flames should be fairly even and appear blue with a light-blue tip. If they flicker and appear yellow, orange, or green, there is likely a combustion issue. Turn off the system right away and call a professional technician to adjust and possibly clean it.

2. Change the Air Filter

Over time, this debris will begin to clog up the filter so air can’t pass through it very well. This causes the furnace to work overtime to keep the home at the desired temperature.

Eventually, this extra work will put too much stress on the parts and cause them to fail. Fortunately, you can prevent this by inspecting the filter at least once a month and replacing it no later than every 90 days.

3. Schedule Annual Service

At the end of the heating season, schedule an appointment with a professional to inspect and clean your system. During their visit, the technician will check all the HVAC parts for excessive wear and tear and replace them if necessary. Then, when you turn the furnace back on next winter, it will be ready to work and won’t breakdown unexpectedly.
