Since skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, an annual exam is highly recommended for all adults. Fortunately, the procedure is simple and painless. A dermatologist can determine if you're at risk or advise you of ways to protect yourself wherever you go. If you’ve never had a skin exam performed, here’s what you need to know.

How to Prepare

There are some small, simple steps you can take before your appointment. First, scan your body and make a note of any spots on your skin you want to bring up to the doctor. It’s important to perform these types of self-checks regularly—the earlier cancer the caught, the easier it will be to treat.

It’s also helpful to remove your nail polish and makeup before leaving for your appointment so that the dermatologist can properly inspect your fingers, fingernails, and facial skin. You can also bring some makeup wipes with you if you'd rather remove it at the appointment. To make it easier to examine your scalp, arrive with your hair down and loose.

What to Expect

dermatologistSkin examinations are usually quick and take around 20 minutes. There are circumstances where it may take longer, however. If it's your first time getting an exam, your doctor will want to go over your medical history. They’ll then examine your skin from head to toe. If your doctor notices a spot or abnormality that needs further analysis, they'll do a biopsy of it for lab testing.

This process typically involves receiving a local anesthetic before the doctor scrapes off a small part of the spot. If the dermatologist feels they need to go deeper, they may perform a punch biopsy using a tool that has a round blade and digs deeper into your skin.

When a biopsy is needed, you’ll typically receive results within 10 days. If the results show that the spot was cancerous, your dermatologist will work with you to determine the next steps and develop a treatment plan.
