Honda® has a reputation for being a reliable vehicle manufacturer. Unfortunately, even the best cars may eventually require engine repair. In addition, the company recently released a memo regarding problems and warranty extensions for certain 2017-2018 CR-Vs and 2016-2018 Civics. The issue primarily occurs in extremely cold weather, but even customers in warmer places have reportedly been impacted.

What the Issue Is

Newer models may experience a hardware problem that leads to oil dilution.

When the engine is on, some of the sprayed fuel may stick to the cylinder wall, make its way down the crankcase, and mix with the engine oil. Most of the time, the mixed fuel vaporizes and travels back to the cylinder, where it’s burned off. However, sometimes more fuel mixes with the engine oil, leading to dilution.

Dilution causes many problems, including loss of power, misfiring cylinders, and the failure of the car’s heating system.

How to Tell You Need Engine Repair

engine repairThere are multiple indications that you might need to contact Honda and an auto repair shop, including:

  • Check Engine Light: The oil dilution issue can trigger the check engine light. It will typically come on when the oil reaches a certain level above the dipstick’s limit. Don’t ignore this signal — go to an engine repair specialist promptly.

  • Stalling: An overfilled oil reservoir can cause misfires and stalling. Aside from the inconvenience and potential danger if the stall occurs in traffic, repeated or drawn-out stalling can damage the driveline or loosen components.

  • Fuel Odors: If your engine is starting to fail, it could produce noxious odors from the exhaust. In high enough concentrations, these fumes might make you feel lightheaded or ill.
