Many foods that your child eats can lead to frequent visits to the pediatric dentist. There’s a range of foods and drinks that stain your teeth. However, it can be difficult to identify the worst offenders. The following foods and beverages are known to stain teeth and should be eaten in moderation and with the correct dental care maintenance.

What Foods & Beverages Stain Your Teeth?

1. Candies & Sugary Snacks

Sugary snacks can cause many dental issues. Sugar sticks to your teeth and provides food for your mouth’s bacteria. The bacteria releases acids that cause tooth decay and ultimately lead to dark stains and even holes

If your child has a serious sweet tooth, try switching out candies and other sugary treats with yogurt, apples, and carrots. Fibrous fruits and vegetables will boost your child’s saliva flow, helping to scrub the surface of their teeth and remove stains. If fruits and veggies simply aren’t doing the trick, try dark chocolates that are lower in sugar.

2. Soda

pediatric dentistLike sugary treats, sugary beverages give the bacteria in your mouth plenty to feed on. The acids in soda wear away your tooth enamel. If your child frequently drinks soda, the damage can reach the next layer of their teeth, called dentin, and cause cavities. Dark-colored sodas can lead to worse stains and a trip a dentist for children.

If your child enjoys soda, do your best to encourage moderation. When they’re enjoying an occasional glass, opt for sugar free sodas. If your kids are bored with water, try making naturally flavored water. Add cucumber and mint, or have your child pick their favorite combinations.

3. Acidic Foods

Even nutritious foods, like citrus fruits and tomatoes, will take a toll on our teeth. The acid in these foods, which is present in most staining foods and beverages, erodes enamel and reveals the dentin layer. Dentin is made up of calcium and phosphate crystals and has a yellow color. Blueberries and blackberries have particularly rich colors that are difficult to get out of their teeth, too. For nutritious and teeth-friendly snacks, cut up pears and strawberries. They contain malic acid, which is said to whiten teeth. Crunchy celery and broccoli are also low in bad acidity and act as tasty teeth cleaners.
