Baseboard heaters are an efficient and effective heating solution. As such, electrical contractors often recommend them to their clients. Before you talk with them about their heat options, be prepared to answer some of their common questions.

What to Know About Baseboard Heaters

How do they work?

These heaters are run on a room-by-room basis. They are installed underneath windows and around the bottom edges of rooms. The heating element is inside the metal baseboard sheath.

Cool air is drawn into the bottom of the heater as it falls to the floor and the heating cable heats it up and distributes it through the aluminum fins inside. Once the air is heated, it automatically rises into the room; this is called convection.

What are their benefits?

These heaters are positioned beneath windows, which is where drafts tend to be. They’ll pull in that cool air before it reaches the rest of the room and heat it, leaving the room more comfortable.

They also work on a zoned heating system, which allows homeowners to heat each room individually. They won’t need to pay to heat parts of the house that are unused and each family member can keep their space at a temperature they find comfortable.

These systems are safe to use. As with any heat system, homeowners should keep all flammable items, such as curtains and upholstery, at a safe distance from the unit. Each is equipped with a safety thermal cutout protection switch, which will shut it off if it overheats and will automatically turn it back on when it reaches a safe temperature.

What does installation require?

Because these systems do not require ductwork or holes to be cut into walls, they are quick and affordable to install. Homeowners should always have you do any installation and repairs since electrical work is dangerous for the untrained individual. Once you’ve finished, they can have the heaters painted to blend in with their décor.
