If your pet requires surgery, you might be concerned with how to care for them while they recover. While your veterinarian will provide information on post-op recovery, knowing what to expect before you arrive can help you prepare. Follow the guide below for a list of do’s and don'ts on caring for your pet after surgery.

Do:

Allow your pet to rest.

Following any surgical procedure, your pet will need adequate rest. While the amount of rest they require will vary depending on their procedure, your veterinarian will recommend you prepare a quiet and comfortable spot where your pet can rest undisturbed for at least 24 hours.

Inspect the incision site daily.

veterinariansUnless covered by heavy bandages, check your pet's incision each day to look for signs of infection. While redness and swelling can be normal after surgery, excessive swelling, deep redness, bleeding, discharge, or foul odors should be reported to your vet right away. Avoid touching your pet's incision, and if you can't, wash your hands before and after contact.

Don't:

Allow your pet to disturb their incision.

Your pet may be tempted to lick, scratch, or chew on their incision. Because these activities can open sutures, cause bleeding, or lead to an infection, try to limit access to their wound by using an e-collar, or recovery collar until their incision heals. These cone-shaped collars can be purchased through your veterinarian or at an animal supply store.

Feed them heavy foods after the procedure.

While it's likely your pet won't have an appetite following surgery, limit their intake of heavy foods, including treats, for at least 24 hours. The anesthesia used to keep your pet comfortable during surgery can also cause nausea and vomiting in post-op recovery. Provide plenty of fresh water and small portions of easily-digestible foods such as cooked chicken or rice.
