Whether you bowl for fun or plan to join a league, you’ll want to score as close to 300 as possible. If you’re a beginner, there are several things you can do to improve your game and get the edge on your opponents. Below, you’ll find a handful of bowling tips for your first time on the lanes.

A Beginner's Guide to Bowling

1. Choose a Comfortable Ball & Shoes

Your ball should feel heavy enough to make an impact on the pins but light enough not to strain your arm or hand. Also, the holes must fit your fingers. Select a ball that has holes slightly bigger than your ring size so that it will release without sticking.

You’ll also need shoes to promote traction on the lanes and avoid slipping. When you borrow a pair from your bowling alley, find one that feels comfortable. The sizing may be different from your regular shoes, so feel free to try on several different sizes.

2. Try Different Approaches

bowlingYour approach to the lane should feel comfortable and natural. Some people like to have a walking start, as this may help to propel the ball forward. However, if you’re concerned about balance, it’s perfectly fine to stand still while you line up your shot. Try both methods and stick with what feels most fluid.

3. Practice Your Swing & Release

When you practice your swing, keep your muscles relaxed for faster and straighter throws. When the ball passes your front ankle, release it, keeping your hand straight and your palm upward. Follow through by continuing to raise your arm and using your feet to keep your balance.

4. Adjust Your Aim

If you’re right-handed, aim for the space between the headpin and the one on its right. If you mostly knock down pins on the left side, move toward the left on your second throw, but keep aim for the same spot to promote accuracy and knock down the remaining pins.
