Dog boarding facilities are convenient for pet parents who require a safe place for their furry friends to stay while they’re away. However, to admit them, your pet must have proper vaccinations. Below are the basic requirements for your dog.

Which Vaccinations Should Dogs Have for Boarding?

1. Canine Distemper

Also known as the DAPP vaccine, this combination protects your pet from distemper, respiratory Adenovirus type 2, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. Since canine distemper could occur if your pet contacts another animal that’s infected, you should maintain a routine vaccination schedule. Dogs should receive a booster at least every three years, or more frequently depending on individual health concerns.

2. Bordetella

dog boardingMore commonly known as canine kennel cough, this vaccine can prevent your pet from catching the condition while at the dog boarding facility. It’s not unusual for them to inhale harmful bacteria, especially in areas that are close-knit with other animals. Although the cough is not generally severe, it is persistent and contagious, which could put other dogs at risk. Most kennels require that pets receive this vaccination for the protection of every animal on-site. You should have a vet administer this annually.

3. Rabies

Rabies is a fatal disease, so your dog must get a single dose at least once a year. Your pet may contract the condition if an infected animal bites them, or otherwise contacts the substance. Because it can take weeks for symptoms to develop, it’s not easy to determine when an animal is sick. This is why protecting your pet before admitting them to the dog boarding facility is essential.
