Frequently considered a “forgotten” appliance due to its basement location, your water heater still plays a significant role in your home’s functionality. If it seems like you are always running short on hot water, there are several possible explanations. Learn about them here, as you may need to schedule plumbing service to resolve the issue.

Why Are Your Faucets Running Cold?

1. Excessive Hot Water Use

Too much hot water use at a time can cause it to run cold temporarily. For example, if you take a long, hot shower while another family member does the same in a different bathroom and yet another family member uses the washing machine, you’ll run out of heated supply. Stagger hot water usage to see if it makes a difference.

2. Appliance Sizing Issues

Your home may lack sufficient hot water because the water heater is too small. Most appliances provide 40 gallons of hot water per hour; however, if yours provides 30 gallons of hot water per hour or less and your family includes four or more people, it cannot accommodate your household. Talk to your local plumbers about the ideal tank size for your home, or consider alternatives such as tankless heaters that heat water on-demand only.

3. Sediment Buildup In Your Water Heater

water heaterWater acquires sediment, such as minerals, and deposits it into your water-heating appliance. Without annual flushing, this material builds up and sinks to the bottom of the tank, creating less room for hot water.

Eventually, sediment hardens to cause other problems, such as tank dents and dings. If you cannot remember the last time the appliance’s tank got flushed, schedule plumbing services immediately to maintain functionality.

4. Water Heater Age

Standard water heaters usually last eight to 12 years, so if yours is over 10 years old, it may no longer have the power to heat water correctly. Get it replaced with an energy-efficient version, such as those marked with an ENERGY STAR seal.
