The rainy season is here, and bugs may try to enter your home in search of food and shelter. Here are a few pest control tips to keep insects away during the stormy weather.

5 Pest Control Tips for the Rainy Season

1. Keep Wood Dry

Some termites are attracted to wet wood, and they’ll eat away at the material until it’s no longer structurally stable. If your neighborhood experiences continuous showers, the wooden elements of your home or the stumps in the backyard won’t dry completely. Between storms, clear away puddles of water around your home and remove lingering wood from the yard.

2. Trim Nearby Greenery

Trees and bushes around the exterior of your home can act as bridges for pests to enter. Once the branches or leaves are relatively dry, the insects will crawl them to access any cracks in your window sills, door frames, or siding. To prevent this from happening, make sure all foliage is kept at least two to three feet back from your home’s exterior, even the roof.

3. Seal Openings

4. Remove for Stagnant Water

A heavy rainstorm may leave a pool of water in your yard. Standing water attracts mosquitoes, as it’s where they prefer to lay their eggs. Make sure to drain all sources of pooling water, like empty gardening pots and birdbaths.

5. Take Care of the Trash

Garbage that hasn’t been thrown away properly will attract pests to your area, as the rain may damage or wash away their food supply. Don’t keep your trash near your home; either put it in your garage or at the curb. Wash food containers before you throw them away, and put scraps in an extra bag, so the bugs can’t detect them.
