If you maintain your heating and cooling system properly, you can often extend the life and lower the operating costs of your furnace and air conditioner or heat pump.  Since the equipment gets the most use in summer and winter, early spring and fall are good times to schedule HVAC maintenance. To help you get the most out of your HVAC system, below are some springtime maintenance tips.

Spring Cooling Maintenance

1. Replace the Filter

It can not be expressed strongly enough the importance of changing the filter.  Some service repair calls would be eliminated if the filter is checked monthly and changed as needed.  While the filter does catch dust and dirt, the main purpose of the furnace filter is to keep the cooling coil clean and running efficiently.  The function of the coil is to remoHVAC maintenance in Troy, MOve moisture and heat from the air inside the home. However, when the filter is clogged and dirty, it interferes with the necessary air flow and will cause the cooling unit to overheat and stop working.  Also, using an incorrect filter will create system issues as well. Make sure the filter being used is the one recommended by the manufacturer of the unit.  CHECK and Change the Filter.

2. Keep the Outdoor AC or             Heat Pump Clean

Central air conditioners and heat pumps use a fluid called refrigerant to move indoor heat outside to the exterior air conditioning unit. The liquid runs through a condenser coil, and a fan blows air to cool it down. The air takes heat away from the coil, and it is subsequently vented outdoors. If debris like leaves, dirt, or pollen clog the vents, the AC unit cannot dissipate the heat and won't cool your house effectively. Clean the vents each spring and make sure nothing is blocking the airflow.  Regular performance of this type of HVAC maintenance also prevents damage caused by overheating equipment.

3. Install a Programmable Thermostat

A digital thermostat lets you program household temperatures to reduce your heating and cooling costs. You can set it so that your home stays more comfortable during the hours when there and program it for a different temperature setting when asleep or away from home. It saves money on utility bills and reduces wear and tear on the system.
