Moisturizing is an essential part of any men’s skin care routine. It doesn’t add moisture to the skin, but rather attracts it and prevents it from dissolving quickly. Without it, your face can become dry, itchy, and more likely to show signs of aging and acne. Here are the steps to follow to keep your skin soft and supple.

A Man's Guide to Moisturizing

1. Choose the Right Product

Many men skip moisturizing because they are concerned about oiliness. However, this step is important for all skin types. It’s simply a matter of finding the right product.

Men’s skin care lines offer many options designed for oily or acne-prone skin. Choose a lightweight lotion if you have these concerns. If you have sensitive skin, look for fragrance-free products to prevent irritation.

2. Patch Test First

Testing the product before using it on your face helps prevent visible irritation and breakouts.

Apply a small amount of product in an inconspicuous area, such as on your inner arm where the skin is thin, or on a spot on your jawline. Wait a day or two to see if there are any negative reactions.

3. Apply to Damp Skin

Once you have the right moisturizer, apply it to clean, slightly damp skin. This helps the product absorb better.

men's skin careA good rule of thumb is to moisturize immediately after washing your face or within three minutes of getting out of the shower. If you have to wait, use a facial mist to dampen the skin before moisturizing for the maximum benefits.

4. Be Gentle

When following your skin care steps, avoid tugging on the skin or using too much pressure. Being rough can result in premature wrinkles, especially in thin areas, such as around the eyes.

Use light, upward strokes around the eyes, neck, and forehead to work against gravity and prevent wrinkles.

5. Do It Twice a Day

Ideally, you should moisturize your face in the morning and before bed. This may require two different products. Choose a day cream or lotion with sunscreen to protect from sun damage, and a heavier night cream without SPF to nourish your skin while you sleep.

Apply moisturizer at least 30 minutes before bed so it has time to absorb without rubbing off on the pillow.
