Wind, rain, snow, and hail can do a number on residential roofing. Unfortunately, homeowners in Colorado must contend with all four. If they take certain steps once the winter starts winding down, though, they can extend the longevity of their roofing considerably. Here are some of the most important spring maintenance tasks for protecting your roof from year to year.

3 Roof Maintenance Tips for Spring

1. Schedule an Inspection

Since heavy snowfall and harsh winter winds can threaten the structural integrity of your roof, schedule a roof inspection during the spring. This will allow you to identify and repair any minor issues before they devolve into major problems. Entering hail season—April to September—with an already compromised roof will only increase the likelihood of significant damage.

2. Clear Away Debris

If you’re like most homeowners, shoveling is the only landscaping you do during the winter months. Once the snow melts, your first landscaping task of the season should be inspecting your property for overgrowth.

Once you’ve finished pruning, clear leaves, pine needles, and other debris off the roof so moisture isn't trapped.

You should also clean the gutters. Failing to remove any clogs that developed over the winter could cause pooling and subsequent water damage.

3. Repair Any Damage

If winter winds blew off a few shingles, these can be easily replaced. However, the call to a professional should be made as soon as possible. Failing to address leaks, punctures, or cracked flashing promptly will only lead to more extensive problems as the weather changes. For example, a leak will worsen during spring rainstorms and the moisture intrusion into your home can lead to mold growth.
