Bringing a new puppy home is exciting, but it also requires a lot of care. Along with ensuring your new pet has nutritious food, fresh water, and plenty of stimulation, you’ll also need to take your pup to the vet for dog shots. The following vaccinations protect against serious diseases, some of which entail life-threatening effects.

What Dog Shots Should My New Puppy Have?

1. Distemper

Distemper is a virus that attacks multiple bodily systems in canines, including the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. It’s spread through the air, as well as shared in food and water. Distemper causes a wide range of serious symptoms, and can even lead to death in some animals. Dogs will need to receive four distemper shots from 6 to 17 weeks, as well as a booster at about the one year mark.

2. Rabies

Rabies is a virus that is transmitted via a bite of an infected animal. It’s almost always deadly unless medical treatment is sought immediately after a bite occurs. The disease poses a serious risk to both animals as well as humans, so many states consider rabies vaccines mandatory. Dogs are usually required to receive a rabies shot every one to three years, starting at about 12 weeks.

3. Parvovirus

dog shotsPuppies younger than four months usually have the greatest risk of catching parvovirus. It causes various gastrointestinal issues, including vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. Immediate medical treatment is required if your dog is infected, as this virus can lead to serious issues if the dehydration is severe. Parvo shots are often provided on the same schedule as distemper.

4. Hepatitis

Dog shots for canine hepatitis can also be provided with parvovirus and distemper vaccinations. Hepatitis impacts the function of a dog’s liver, and in some cases, symptoms may be mild. Other dogs experience more serious symptoms. A veterinarian can manage the symptoms of hepatitis, but there is no cure.
