New York City has unique customs, traditions, and a sprawling transportation network that can be overwhelming for first-time visitors. Fortunately, understanding the local etiquette before you go will give you the confidence to explore the city and blend in as a real New Yorker. If you’re planning on visiting the city, below are a few do’s and don’ts to follow.

Do:

Be considerate on the subway.

transportationNew York’s public transportation system serves millions of riders every day, so trains and buses are often crowded. If you’re taking a quick service ride, remove your backpack, don’t put your bags on the seats, and try to take up as little space as possible. This will allow other people to fit in the car comfortably.

Keep moving.

New York is full of amazing views and landmarks you won’t find anywhere else, but walking slowly down the sidewalk is sure to irritate the people behind you. Try to keep up with the flow of sidewalk traffic, and step out of the way if you want to stop and really savor the city.

Don’t:

Exit the car service on the side of traffic.

When your car service drops you off, all members of your party should exit on the side closest to the sidewalk. At the very least, getting out on the wrong side will likely slow down traffic, if not cause an actual accident. It’s best to be safe and prevent unwanted injuries.

Take your time ordering.

New York is a fast-paced city, which means restaurants, pizza places, and delis might have a quicker rhythm than you’re used to. To avoid frustrating the locals behind you, it’s always best to know what you want before you reach the counter.
