Many owners move their RVs or boats to storage during the winter months to ensure they are protected. However, sitting for long periods can harm the functionality of them both unless proper precautions are taken. For that reason, it's important to effectively prepare the boat or vehicle before dropping it off at storage. Here's how to accomplish that feat.

Clean It Thoroughly

Giving the RV or boat a scrub from top to bottom provides convenience when you're ready to use it again. It also removes any scents that may attract pests and rodents that have the potential to cause significant damage inside the vehicle or the boat.

Begin the process by removing all food from the cabinets and the refrigerator, and be sure to dump out any ice as well. Next, wipe down and disinfect all surfaces, including the floor. Use this opportunity to turn off any and all appliances, and remove the propane tank if applicable. Finish off by washing the exterior to prevent paint damage.

Fill Up Fluids

RV storageMany components of RVs and boats rely on liquids to keep the mechanical equipment lubricated. Without this moisture, debris can buildup and metal pieces can corrode. As such, the majority of fluids need to be changed and topped off, including oil, wiper fluid, and brake fluid. Additionally, fill up the gas tank and add fuel stabilizer.

Water tanks, on the other hand, need draining. This list includes the fresh and hot water tanks, as well as the sewage tank. If utilizing storage for these items during the winter months, consider pouring antifreeze down the drains and flushing them out to prevent frozen plumbing.

Disconnect Battery

Even though the boat or vehicle will be turned off at storage, it can still pull power from the battery. Temperature fluctuations also impact the cores. To avoid a dead charge prior to its next use, disconnect and remove the battery. Store it in a dry, temperature-controlled room and charge it monthly using a plug-in charger. For optimal convenience, utilize an automatic battery charger.
