Do's & Don'ts for Visiting a Medical Center April 27, 2020

Do's & Don'ts for Visiting a Medical Center , Bronx, New York

Whether you’re going in for a routine checkup or have concerns about your health, visiting a medical center can be an overwhelming experience. You may be nervous, unsure, or uncomfortable, which could cause you to forget to bring crucial items with you. By knowing some office etiquette ahead of time, you can make the appointment more pleasant and productive for you and your health care providers.

Do:

Prepare before the appointment.

Before your appointment, confirm with the medical center that they are in your insurance company’s network. If you don’t have insurance or are electing to see an out-of-network provider, ask about financial aid options, such as payment plans, as you will have to pay out of pocket.

Know your medical history.

medicalcenterAt the beginning of most doctor’s appointments, you’ll be asked to fill out a form describing your medical history. This includes any conditions you have been diagnosed with, as well as any genetic illnesses. You’ll also need to tell the staff about any medications or supplements you’re taking and if you have allergies.

Don’t:

Self-diagnose.

It’s easy to find information on almost any medical condition by surfing the web. However, online resources are not to be used as a diagnostic tool. Many conditions have symptoms in common, and it could be easy to misdiagnose yourself.

Leave with unaddressed concerns.

Make the most of your visit and ask your medical team all the questions you have. If you don’t understand something that the doctor says, ask for clarification. If you’re afraid you won’t remember what to ask or what is said, consider making a list of questions beforehand or taking a friend or family with you to your appointment to take notes for you.
