Vinyl siding is one of the perennial favorites for exterior cladding. It’s durable and offers a variety of design options. It’s also low-maintenance. The occasional removal of mold or mildew is primarily what’s needed to keep it in top-notch shape.

How Mold Develops on Siding

Mold thrives best in dark, damp places, so it’s common to see it in areas where there’s little to no light. Vinyl siding on the shaded part of your property is more vulnerable to mildew.

Excess moisture comes from many possible sources, such as water that gets trapped underneath the cladding, overflows from gutters, sprays from nearby sprinklers, or leaks out of broken pipes. Sugary sap from nearby trees or slow-evaporating morning dew can also trigger growth. Dirt, dust, and other debris may contain organic substances that contribute to the problem.

How to Prevent & Remove Mold

Once a month or so, clean the gutters of debris buildup that can cause clogging and overflowing. You may need to adjust the downspouts so that fluids drain away from the siding.

If you see growth or discoloration, clean it quickly before the problem worsens. Mix three parts white vinegar to seven parts water to create an effective cleaning solution for light stains. Add detergent for extra cleaning power.

For more stubborn stains, combine one-third cup powdered laundry detergent, two-thirds cup household cleaner, one-quart bleach, and a gallon of water. Use this solution sparingly, as it can harm plants, and wear gloves to protect your hands. Scrub the solution and rinse with clean water afterward.
