You may not have realized that neglecting your car’s air filter could lead to auto repair. Several components won’t function properly without a clean filter. Here are some indications that your air filter needs to be changed.

How to Know When to Replace Your Car’s Air Filter

1. Malfunctioning Engine

If the filter is clogged, the engine might cough while idle. It may even have difficulty firing up if the spark plugs are too dirty. Additionally, a congested filter restricts airflow, so gasoline particles may gather on the engine, triggering the engine light on your dashboard.

If you don’t quickly address the effects of the filter on the engine, you may need to take it in for auto repair when more serious problems develop.

2. Poor Fuel Efficiency

3. Smell of Gasoline

The carburetor and fuel injection system need oxygen to push through the exhaust system. Without it, they’ll push excess fuel instead, so you’ll smell gasoline each time you start your car. If you notice this, find out if the air filter is blocking oxygen flow.

4. Visible Grime

Even if none of these signs come up, you should check your air filter at least every 12,000 to 15,000 miles or so. If dirt, dust, and pollen have accumulated on it, they’ll be easy to spot.

The grime may also be evident in the exhaust, which may be black, and it might exit the exhaust pipe with a cough. In extreme cases, there may even be small flames. Take your car to an auto repair shop right away to replace the air filter if you see these signs.
