Rugs add color and warmth to a space. Here are some ways to place them strategically to highlight the best features of your home.

A Room-By-Room Guide to Rug Placement

Dining Room

Many people place large area rugs directly beneath their dining room tables. This protects the flooring by preventing chair legs from scratching the surface.

Make sure to choose a rug that’s large enough to cover the entire span of the table and chairs, leaving extra room behind them to account for movement. Tables with six seats often require eight- by 10-foot rugs, while 10-chair tables may warrant 10- by 14-foot floor coverings. Select a low-pile option to prevent food debris from getting stuck in the fibers.

Living Area

A rug will help create a focal point in the living room. Place a five- by eight-foot rug perpendicular to the couch, or by a window to highlight a beautiful view.

Bathroom

Any product you place in this area should be washable and absorbent. You can put a 21- by 34-inch mat in front of the shower to soak up water and protect your flooring from mildew.

Place a 24- by 60-inch runner in front of a double vanity to cushion your feet, or add several smaller mats near the sinks and bath areas to create zones.

Bedroom

Many people enjoy stepping out of bed onto warm and comfortable flooring.

You can select a large area rug to cover most of the room. Queen beds typically require eight- by 10-foot floor coverings, while kings need nine- by 12-foot options. Place the edges before the bedside tables so the other ends extend past the feet of the bed.
