What to Know About Historical Fenway Park

Origins & Openings

School TripFenway Park, the home to the Boston Red Sox, was originally built in 1912. The first professional game played in the newly minted baseball stadium was between the Red Sox and the New York Highlanders, who later became the Yankees. The Red Sox won their debut game and notched 105 wins that season.

Early Years

In the year 1947, seven light towers were installed at Fenway Park, allowing the Red Sox to play night games for the first time. This same year, the advertisements were removed from the left-field wall and painted green. This wall became known as the “Green Monster” and has become a defining characteristic of the park.

Fenway Park is a frequent school trip destination for American history classes as the stadium provides an avenue to discuss politics. The park was home to various political rallies throughout the decades, including one by former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944.

Later Years

From 1963 to 1968, Fenway Park was also home to the American Football League’s New England Patriots. The stadium hosted collegiate football matches as well as other sporting events and contests, from wrestling and boxing to ice hockey games.

This versatile space has hosted a variety of legendary musicians as well. Artists such as The Who, Billy Joel, Phish, Pearl Jam, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, and Jay-Z have played sold-out concerts at Fenway Park.
