Homeowners should regularly monitor and maintain their air conditioning system to ensure it’s working properly and to improve its lifespan. Over time, you may encounter problems with your unit. If you notice warm air coming out of the vents, you may need A/C repair. Below are four possible reasons why your system isn’t performing correctly.

4 Causes of Faulty Air Conditioners

1. Thermostat Settings

Most thermostats control a fan built into the A/C that circulates the air. When turned on, it will constantly cycle. If the A/C hasn’t kicked on in a while, the fan may move warm air instead of infiltrating the home with cool breezes.

Make sure the thermostat fan is set to auto instead of on, so it only transports air when the AC is active. Also, be sure the battery is in top shape, as low batteries can cause malfunctions that may affect the home temperature.

2. Flipped Breakers

A/C repairYour HVAC systems require dedicated electrical circuits because they generate heat and use a lot of power. If your unit doesn’t have its own circuit, the breaker may flip to protect you from using too much power on one circuit.

Check that the circuit breaker hasn’t flipped and turned the power off at the breaker box. Have an A/C repair technician check that the electricity to the interior and exterior cooling units have their own circuits to prevent this issue from repeating.

3. Clogged Air Filters

Every air conditioner features an air filter that prevents contaminants like dust and fur from getting into the system. When homeowners don’t change these features every 60 to 90 days, they can clog, which may let debris into the unit interior and onto the evaporator coils. Dirty coils can freeze, causing the motor to blow out warm air into the home. Always replace the air filter every two to three months and contact an A/C repair team if your filters may have caused a clog.

4. Low Refrigerant

Refrigerant, also known as coolant, should last for ten years or as long as your A/C unit works. However, if there is a leak, the liquid will seep out, potentially filling your home with warm air instead of cold. If the unit appears to have a lot of condensation or features ice buildup, these are key signs that the refrigerant is leaking and you need A/C repair to fix the hole and refill the coolant.
