A prostate biopsy detects prostate cancer. During the procedure, samples of tissue are taken from the prostate, a walnut-shaped gland that assists in the nourishment and transportation of sperm. The following information will help prepare you for your upcoming appointment. 

What Should You Do Before a Prostate Biopsy?

Prior to the appointment, your doctor will gather information about your overall health, such as medications or supplements you take and any allergies you have. If you take blood thinners, your doctor may ask you to stop a week or so before the procedure. They may also prescribe you antibiotics to start taking a couple of days before to reduce the chances of infection.

If you’re being sedated, arrange a ride home. On the day of the procedure, you should have only a light meal.

What Happens During the Appointment?

A transrectal biopsy is the most common testing method. During the appointment, the doctor will ask you to lie on your side and pull your knees up to your chest. Alternatively, you may be instructed to lie on your stomach. After preparing the area, the doctor will insert an ultrasound probe into the rectum to take images that identify areas that require numbing. The images will also be used to guide the biopsy needle.

Once you’re numbed, the doctor will slip a spring-propelled needle into the wall of the rectum and take tissue samples. Typically, 10 to 12 samples are taken in around 10 minutes. 

In a transperineal biopsy, the doctor will make a cut in the perineum and insert the needle into the prostate through it. Samples of tissue are drawn out through the cut and the procedure is usually guided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans.

What Can You Expect After a Prostate Biopsy?

Your doctor will recommend that you rest and engage in only light activity for up to 48 hours after the procedure.

During this time, you may experience soreness in the rectum. You might also find blood in your stool, sperm, or urine. If your symptoms worsen or you develop a fever, call your doctor for a follow-up.
